Hands on review on Microsoft Lumia 640

Unboxing the device

The Lumia 640 was unboxed and the device was accompanied with a Li-Ion 2500 mAh battery and a charger. The rear side of the phone has slot for battery, a micro SIM and a micro SD memory card. As we have seen that the new Windows Phone comes with vibrant back colors such as Glossy cyan, Orange, White, Matte black. This one I am reviewing is in Matte black. The dimension of Lumia 640 is 141.3 x 72.2 x 8.8 mm (5.56 x 2.84 x 0.35 in) and weight is around 145 g (5.11 oz).

Body and Display

Now as you fit all the parts, the phone will start. Several new revamps have been made in the body of Lumia 640. The front camera is located in the top left corner of the screen. The right edge of the phone has the power button and volume buttons. One of the most disappointing thing I noticed in Lumia 640 is the removal of the dedicated camera button. The camera button was really a great feature which provided convenient image capturing. The display size is 5 inch, which is moderately decent with a pretty low screen resolution 720 x 1280 pixels. The glance screen is turned on by default. You can turn it off.

Internal hardware and Storage

Lumia 640 sports a Qualcomm MSM8926 Snapdragon 400 Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 processor. The GPU provided is Adreno 305. There is 1 GB RAM and 8 GB on-board storage which is expandable up to 128 GB via micro SD card. We have updated our test unit to Windows 10 Mobile Insider build and we did not find any lag or any other issues. It has a back firing speaker. We will not say it’s best but quite loud and pretty much impressive at this price tag.

Camera

Though 8 MP is not a big deal for smartphones nowadays but given the price, it’s commendable. However the front facing camera is really disheartening. Lumia 640 comes with Lumia Camera app and can capture 3264 x 2448 pixels snaps. It has autofocus, LED flash, 1/4” sensor size. Lumia 640 can records 1080p video at 30fps. You can check the photos which have been taken in low light as well as from the front facing camera.
