Cabinet files are archive file formats for Windows operating systems. Cabinet files facilitate loss less data and file compression. In addition, it supports embedded digital certificates used for maintaining archive integrity. Cabinet files were called diamond files before. In short, they are called cab files. Cab files have .cab extension. In this article, I will show you how to install CAB file in Windows 10.

Quoting from Microsoft’s definition, “Developers can use cabinet file creation tool such as Makecab.exe to make cabinet files for use with installer packages. The Makecab.exe utility is included in the Windows SDK Components for Windows Installer Developers.

Developers can also use a cabinet file creation tool such as Cabarc.exe to make cabinet files for use with installer packages. This tool writes to the Diamond cabinet structure.

The file keys of the files stored inside of a cabinet file must match the entries in the File column of the File table and the sequence of files in the cabinet must match the file sequence specified in the Sequence column. For more information, see Using Cabinets and Compressed Sources.”

Steps To Install A CAB File In Windows 10 Using Command Prompt

1. Open the Windows 10 Search panel. Type Command prompt in the search panel. As Command Prompt appears in the search result, right click on it and select Run as Administrator. This will launch the elevated command prompt.

2. Copy and paste the following command and hit the Enter button after that. Substitute the full path of .cab file with the actual path of the .cab file in your PC.

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:"Full path of .cab file

3. If Command Prompt asks you if you, press Y and hit the Enter button.
