AOMedia Video 1 (AV1) is an open, royalty-free video coding format designed for video transmissions over the Internet. It is being developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), a consortium of firms from the semiconductor industry, video on demand providers, and web browser developers, founded in 2015. The AV1 bitstream specification includes a reference video codec.
Microsoft has released the AV1 Video Extension app that enables you to play AV1 videos on any popular video streaming service or video streaming application on your Windows 10 device. This feature is available in Windows 10 Build 17763 and all higher versions. This extension helps video apps installed on Windows 10 play videos that have been encoded using the AV1 video coding standard developed by the Alliance for Open Media.
When you install the AV1 video codec, any app such as Microsoft Edge, Movies & TV, and Windows Media Player can use the codec to play AV1 videos.
Steps To Add AV1 Codec Support To Windows 10
1. Download AV1 Video Extension from Microsoft Store. Click on Get to start installation.
2. When installation is complete, click on Launch.
3. That’s all. Now, you can check out any video on a compatible video streaming platform. Right click on any video, and click on Stats for Nerds.
4. Now, in the codecs section (as marked in the screenshot), you can find av01. So, with the extension installed, you can play any video on your Windows 10 PC, that has been encoded with AV1 video coding standard, developed by the Alliance for Open Media.
