Our lives are becoming more intertwined with the digital landscape. For the average user, their personal identity is stored somewhere within this complicated network. This could be an address, phone number, or even social security number.

This obviously means that we have to be wary of cyber threats. If you’re a Windows user, you’re probably aware that this operating system has had its fair share of security hiccups. However, the OS has come a long way and Windows 10 is still the most secure version of all the updates.

That doesn’t mean you can be complacent. In this article, we’ll take a look at some proactive measures you can take to fortify your overall computer security.

Use Windows Hello

Windows Hello isn’t just a method for users to sign-in to their devices quicker. It’s actually an advanced security system. With Windows Hello, you’re using a biometric sign-in system that either uses fingerprint, iris, or facial recognition. It’s almost impossible to crack.

Old-school passwords can be hacked or stolen. This is ultimately true if you’re one to use the same password for most of your accounts. You can activate Windows Hello in the sign-in options under the settings.

Automatically Update Windows 10

I’m sure we’re all guilty of delaying our OS updates from time to time, thinking that we don’t need any new features. But updating to the latest OS version isn’t just about that.

The Windows version you’re running now isn’t perfect. There are loopholes and outdated software elements within the code that makes up the system. So, frequent Windows security patches are needed to ensure that your computer is protected from malicious software.

If you fail to do so, you will be more vulnerable to data loss and even identity theft or fraud. Of course, you can also use an identity protection service to enhance your security precautions further. So the next time the notification to update arises, think twice before skipping!

Enable Windows Firewall

This is a necessity especially if you are connected to a network or Internet. The main purposes of Windows Firewall are to prevent any unauthorized access to the computer. In a sense, it acts as a gatekeeper for your computer.

By default, Windows Firewall is enabled right from the factory, so you wouldn’t have to worry about it. But if you do want to make some adjustments, go to Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Security -> Firewall & Network Protections

Enable Windows Defender

Premium antivirus software is expensive, but you don’t need to spend an arm or leg for computer security. Chances are, your computer is already equipped with Windows Defender and make sure it is enabled.

The advantage of Windows Defender compared to third-party antivirus software is that it is maintained by those who know the OS best. Technically, you wouldn’t need any other antivirus software as it would only slow your computer down.
