A patent application was made by the Redmond based tech giant Microsoft, back in August 2016. The patent has been published last month. As far as the document reveals, it is about reducing the bezels from a plethora of devices such as tablets, computer monitors, TVs, mobile phones, etc. Ever since, it has been published, there is a conjecture that the future Surface devices will plausibly come with thinner bezels. Such a conjecture is quite obvious because, Microsoft can always incorporate its own patents in its devices, Surfaces being the classy tablets by Microsoft. However, right now, it is not clear from the patent document, which device is likely to see the change first.
The aim behind this patent is to fruitfully reduce the border of an electronic device. The reduction method involves a display unit with a display active area disposed between an encapsulation and a substrate layer having an inner as well as an outer surface. The patent says, “the encapsulation layer and the inner surface of the substrate; cutting a section of the display unit at one edge of the display unit such that a portion of the encapsulation layer and a portion of the substrate are removed from the display unit while no display active area is removed; placing a transparent cover over the display unit, the transparent cover having a first section and a second section, wherein the first section of the transparent cover is disposed in a plane parallel with the encapsulation layer such that the encapsulation layer is disposed between the first section of the transparent cover and the display active area, and wherein the second section of the transparent cover is disposed along the cut section of the display unit in a plane perpendicular with the first section; and applying a sealant to cover an opening between the second section of the transparent cover and the outer surface of the substrate at the edge of the cut section of the display unit, wherein the sealant is positioned along a plane parallel with the first section of the transparent cover.”
If it comes into reality, then electronic devices like tablets, televisions, smartphones can be manufactured with minimal bezel. The patent throws a distinctive light on making such screens.
