A Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows you to surf the web and share documents through a secure and private connection. Earlier, VPNs were only used by businesses, governments, or organizations who wanted to secure their confidential data. Since employees had to work remotely and needed to connect online, businesses had to create a secure connection, or they would be at risk of being hacked or losing their data. Nowadays, VPNs are used by almost everyone because they guarantee that your data remains encrypted, your location stays private, and that you surf the web anonymously.

Choosing a VPN service

You should choose a VPN provider based on reputation. Sign up with the service only if the web page is marked as secure in the upper left corner of your browser. You’ll then be prompted to download a software program to be able to use the provider’s servers. Once you have access to a list of private connections, you’ll be able to use them on all of your other gadgets, whether for your PCs, phones or tablets.

Having a free VPN is not always the best option because it can easily be detected by different websites, especially by streaming services that operate in Canada. But that doesn’t mean that you have to spend a fortune on a trustworthy VPN service. You can browse cheap VPNs in Canada 2020 to make sure that you pick the best provider that fits your needs and budget. Most providers allow you to pay less if you sign up for an annual subscription, while many will also give you a free one-month trial.

Configuring the VPN on Windows

You can configure your VPN at home using your router, which takes more effort, but ensures that no devices linked to your network will need to be configured individually. Follow these steps to configure your VPN on a Windows device:

Step #1

Turn on the Cortana search bar and manually search for a VPN. Alternatively, you can go to settings > Network & Internet > VPN.

Step #2

Click on Change virtual private networks (VPN).

Step #3

Click on Add a VPN connection.

Step #4

A new window will open, where you will need to enter the data of your VPN connection.

Step #5

Click on the drop-down menu under VPN provider, and choose Built-in. The VPN type will change to automatic, and the type of sign-in info will be changed to the user name and password.

Step #6

Fill the fields, connection name, and server name. This varies from one VPN provider to the next since different VPNs support different types of connections such as IKEv2, PPTP, and L2TP.

Step #7

Scroll down to find the field where you can type in your user name and password, which should be provided to you by the VPN service provider.

Step #8

Connect to your recently-created VPN network, which you will find if you click on internet access on your taskbar.

Signing up for a VPN is simpler than it looks, and you only have to go through these steps once. Once you’re done, you’ll be able to surf the internet securely, as a VPN works as a tunnel for your information, so that you can stay anonymous and protected.
