The telecommunication industry is pacing rapidly and to cope up with the progress, the connectivity across the globe needs to be strengthened. Amid the various facets of the telecom sector, one of the blooming technology is the cloud technology. Microsoft Azure, Office 365 and OneDrive are some of the popular cloud services of Microsoft. Hence Microsoft has special penchant to facilitate underwater connectivity to data centers using underwater data cables. Microsoft has already started investing huge amount of money in subsea cables and terrestrial dark fiber capacity.

Microsoft invests in underwater data cable to enable worldwide connectivity

Microsoft has already signed deals with Hibernia and Aqua Comms. Microsoft is trying to connect each company by underwater data cables that would connect different data centers from Atlantic and Pacific region. Hence the Redmond based tech giant is investing generously to use these underwater data cables to connect from North America to Ireland and to the United Kingdom. The main function of these underground data cables are higher capacity and lower latency.

Satya Nadella has envisioned to make Microsoft a cloud centered company. “Additionally, we joined a consortium comprised of China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Chunghwa Telecom, KT Corporation with TE SubCom as the cable supplier. As part of our participation in the consortium, Microsoft will invest in its first physical landing station in the US connecting North America to Asia”, said Davud Crowly, Managing Director, Network Enablement, Microsoft Azure. “The New Cross Pacific (NCP) Cable Network will provide faster data connections for customers, aid Microsoft in competing on cloud costs, all while creating jobs and spurring local economies. The goal of our expansions and investments in subsea cables is so our customers have the greatest access to scale and highly available data, anywhere.”
